Our Story

The orchestra started in September of 2010 with 19 members, people who had seen an announcement, or heard about the new group by word of mouth from other musicians and music-lovers. Lantz Berets, of Westside Music, is our conductor, and Karen Berets is the assistant conductor and an accomplished strings teacher. Some of our members had never played before, or had never played a string instrument, or hadn't played for many years. The "newbies" spend part of each rehearsal learning their instruments, then join the "more experienced" members to rehearse together during the second hour.

We presented our first concert on November 29, at Evergreen Christian Community in West Olympia, the same building where we rehearse each Monday night. Our debut concert was a resounding success, even eliciting a standing ovation! (program summary below)

We are now the third New Horizons group in the area, joining the Olympia and Tacoma bands who incorporated in November of 2003 as a non-profit organization under the Pacific Northwest New Horizons Band banner. The PNW group is also part of the New Horizons International Music Association as a charter member. We are all glad to be part of the growing family of New Horizons Music groups.
